For centuries London’s cattle market was Smithfield on the eastern fringes of the City. Drovers brought animals down what is today the A1, which incorporates Holloway Road and Upper Street in Islington, on long journeys from Scotland and the north of England.

The animals would then often be fattened up in fields on the outskirts. The striking clock tower was built in by James Bunstone Bunnings, and was orginally the centrepiece of a new cattle market developed by the City of London Corporation to replace Smithfields as the livestock market for London.

Islington Council, supported with a grant of almost £2million from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, has fully restored and repaired the historic 19th century clock tower. By the start of the 20th century, the size of the Cally Market had outgrown the original Cattle Market.
